How long does it take to make a Story Quilt?
This depends on factors like quilt size and number of participants in the project. If for example, we’re working with a large school, the writing and textile components might require a maximum of thirty sessions. A smaller number of participants will need fewer sessions. In addition to contact hours, Story Quilts can require up to two months for studio time, digitial printing, and framing.
How many participants can you work with?
We have worked with as few as 18 and as many as 680 (an entire school).
Do you have to work with a consistent group of participants?
This process builds and a core of consistent participants is nice, but not necessary. If we are working with several groups, they can be updated about the Story Quilt progress, add to the collaboration and take the project to the next step of completion. Several successful projects have engaged a large group and chosen a smaller focus group that is more deeply involved.
What will this cost?
Cost depends on the size and scope of the project. After our first planning meeting, we give you with an estimate that includes studio time, materials and teaching time.
How will you represent our community?
During pre-meetings, we come to understand the partner organization and, with the help of a focus group, decide a theme that properly symbolizes their group. Much of our work is allegorical. It represents the community we work with, its values, images and thoughts, but we also allow for the magic that always occurs when we create with others. Very often surprises surface that we never could have imagined.
